Daryl began playing drums in 1966 during his 6th grade at Central Junior High School in Nederland, Texas. His love of music was reinforced by his junior high school band director, Charles Roberts. After learning the basics of snare drum, his parents bought him his first drum set. He and some fellow Central band members formed a "Tiajuana Brass" style group and began performing at school. During his 8th grade year he became a member of a local dance band and began playing rock and roll gigs. He continued to perform throughout high school, both in school concert and stage bands as well as at local churches and with dance bands. During high school he was a member of the Golden Pride of the Golden Triangle directed by sweepstakes band director Blanton McDonald and served as percussion section leader his junior and senior year.
After high school Daryl went on to study music at Lamar University where he distinguished himself as "the hot drummer" with Jimmy Simmons Jazz Band. Daryl left school to pursue a professional touring/playing career for some years, playing with Stuart Rojo, Mike Smith, and Gary Weldon. He eventually came back to Lamar, however, finishing his music education degree and fulfilling his dream of becoming a successful band director. Daryl began his teaching career in the Little Cypress-Mauriceville school district as an assistant at Little Cypress Junior High for 4 years and as head director for 2 more years before accepting a teaching position in his hometown of Nederland. Initially, he was a roving director who taught percussion at all three campuses, but it soon became apparent that he was fully qualified to direct a band of his own. When the position came open in 1991 at C.O. Wilson Middle School, Daryl was given the nod and served in the capacity of head director for the next 15 years.
Besides his rock and roll experiences, Daryl has performed as a set drummer and in the percussion section with the Symphony of Southeast Texas performing with guest stars such as The Manhattan Rhythms Kings and Ben Toth. He has played drum set with Carol Lawrence and Robert Goulet, Blackstone the Magician and the Lullaby of Broadway Review. He has performed on shows with Dionne Warwick, Burt Bacharach, Debbie Reynolds, Donald O'Connor, Frank Sinatra Jr. and Johnny Mathis as a percussionist. Other groups he has performed with include the Concert Band of Southeast Texas, the Jimmy Simmons Orchestra, the Wayne Dyess Orchestra, the Dyess/Rogers Band, Jimbos Dixie Revue, and of course the Night & Day Orchestra.
Daryl Wilson holds or has held memberships in Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia fraternity, Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmaster's Association, the National Association of Military Marching Bands, and the National Association of Rudimental Drummers (NARD).
